چکیده
In this paper some numerical restrictions for surfaces with an involution are obtained. These formulas are used to study surfaces of general type S with pg = q = 1 having an involution i such that S/i is a non-ruled surface and such that the bicanonical map of S is not composed with i. A complete list of possibilities is given and several new examples are constructed, as bidouble covers of surfaces. In particular the first example of a minimal surface of general type with pg = q = 1 and K 2 = 7 having birational bicanonical map is obtained. 2000 Mathematics Classification: 14J29.

Let T be a torus over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0, and consider a projective T -module P(V ). We determine when a projective toric subvariety X ⊂ P(V ) is self-dual, in terms of the configuration of weights of V .

We study blowups of affine n-space with center an arbitrary monomial ideal and call monomial ideals that render smooth blowups tame ideals. We give a combinatorial criterion to decide whether the blowup is smooth and apply this criterion to discuss a smoothing procedure proposed by Rosenberg, monomial building sets and permutohedra.

We prove that the algorithm for desingularization of algebraic varieties in characteristic zero of the first two authors is functorial with respect to regular morphisms. For this purpose, we show that, in characteristic zero, a regular morphism with connected affine source can be factored into a smooth morphism, a ground-field extension and a generic-fibre embedding. Every variety of characteri...
